I'll admit it. I did expect more from the film, but I adored it anyway. After I watch a good movie, I get this weird feeling in my tummy. Kind of like butterflies, and I just can't stop thinking about it. Not very many movies still do that to me. Penelope actually did. This would be the first time I've ever REALLY adored a "Romance-Comedy". Though maybe this movie deserves it's own genre. I felt more could have been done with Reese Witherspoon's character. The movie really had heart. Sorry, but WTF, how was the butler, Jake, the witch? It was completely random and utterly confusing, I had no idea it was coming and it did throw me off a bit.
The casting was absolute genius. Christina Ricci was beautiful, even with the prosthetic nose. James McAvoy was gorgeous, being in love with him is nothing new. But I fell in love with his character as well. I've fallen in love with all his characters. He's such an amazing actor. I'd really like to see him as a bad guy in a movie, we all know he can act, but we want to see him diversify. And he does a very convincing Yank accent. (A million times better than Orlando Bloom in Elizabethtown, but even I do a better American accent than Bloom, he was terrible in that)
Catherine O'Hara is brilliant. I LOVED her character, she was so hilariously annoying! I'm sure everyone can relate to the moments of Mother Madness. A lot of it seemed very familiar (: Peter Dinklage, as per usual, was brilliant. And my, my, Simon Woods. I remember him from Pride & Prejudice, and no matter how horrible his character was, he was still funny, in an idiotic way. very different from the sweet Mr. Bingley.
Even though this was Mark Palansky's directorial debut, I thought it was directed beautifully. The Soundtrack was lovely (I'm downloading it now :) The sets were GORGEOUS. I want to live there! Everything was so amazingly beautiful, and I loved the clothes Penelope wore! Everyone should watch this, except idiots who constantly make LSD references throughout movies. (You know who you are) The "reunion" between Max/Johnny and Penelope is definitely a must-see scene. (: Ahh, it makes your heart melt.
